More than 100 people have been exposed to short-wave radiation due to a malfunctioning light bulb. Those effected were exposed for an hour, 18 were sent to the hospital with severe sunburns and swollen eyes.

According to The Associated Press, the exposure occurred during a memorial in honor of September 11 held Friday at the Baker Elementary School in Columbia. Attendees, many of whom were military veterans, said they started to feel symptoms soon after the event began.

Those at the event, many military veterans, reportedly began feeling symptoms. The majority of those effected were older adults sitting under the broken bulb - no children were admitted to the hospital.

Dr. Michael Richardson says the symptoms resulted from a radiation leak from a halide bulb. The bulbs are designed with a special membrane that blocks the UV rays, but occasionally break. Halide bulbs are common in gyms.

The gym was closed during the weekend and the bulb was removed.
