This strategy of prohibiting branding and logos will be implemented in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
There is no proof that the plans would actually lessen the number of youth who smoke, said the smokers' lobby group Forest.
Forest spokesman Neil Rafferty said that vending machines should be credit-card operated so that the children will not be able to buy from them.
In the meantime, there is already an ongoing TV advertisement for parents who smoke. The advertisement says that children of smokers are three times more likely to adopt the vice as compared with those whose parents do not smoke.
The Scottish government announced last week that it has proposals on limiting tobacco sales in the country. Shops can no longer display cigarette packs on their shelves.
Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo said in a statement that the government must act to remove the temptation for children to smoke.
The government's main concern is to guard the youth from smoking, she added.
