A 15-year-old cancer patient in Britain has successfully undergone a pioneering surgery to rebuild his shoulder using his elbow.

Doctors at Leeds General Infirmary had to amputate the arm of Tom Lemm in Pontefract, West Yorks, because of a tumor at the top of it. However, the surgeons created a new shoulder out of tissue and muscle from his lost elbow.

The surgical team, led by Professor Simon Kay, inserted a metal support plate in Tom's collar bone that will allow him to wear an artificial limb. Lemm, who has been battling cancer for three years, is the first person in Britain to undergo the seven-hour procedure, according to the BBC.

The first operation of this kind was carried out by a team of doctors in Japan.
