A blood test that offers patients an early diagnosis of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's could be available by the end of the year in the U.S. market.

Power 3 Medical Products, an Oklahoma-based pharmaceutical company, says it plans to bring the test, called NuroPro, to market by the third quarter or fourth quarter of this year.

The test would be able to identify 59 protein biomarkers that cause neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's or Lou Gehrig's disease. It can also assess whether a patient is free of any troubling neurological indicators with an accuracy rate of more than 90 percent, according to the firm. The diseases can currently only be diagnosed once symptoms develop.

Clinical trials under way in the U.S. and Greece have so far tested more than 180 patients. The manufacturer claims a success rate of 60 to 70 percent in identifying those with Alzheimer's, Parkinson's or Lou Gehrig's diseases.

The company plans to launch the test in Greece first, before promoting it in the American market by the end of the year. If trial results are successful, the test could be launched in Great Britain early next year.
