The birth defects have been detected near China's coal mines, which produce serious threats to newly born babies health. Coal mines were said to produce air and water pollutions, government official said.
According to National Population and Family Planning Commission, birth defects detected in 2001 with 104.9 per 10,000 births to last year's 145.5 percent with 40.6 percent increased in just five years.
Deputy head of the commission and author of the report Jiang Fan said, "A baby with birth defects is born every 30 seconds in China and the situation has worsened year by year."
Fan also said about 30-40 percent of the newly born deformed babies died immediately after birth.
