An Indonesian woman from Sumatra island has died of bird flu, making her the 87th victim in the world's most affected country of the disease on Monday, Indonesia health ministry said.

The health ministry bird flu information center confirmed that the 44-years-old woman, which died at Pekanbaru General Hospital in central Sumatra, tested positive for the H5N1 string virus. Two samples were taken from the woman and both were positive for the virus.

The center said, "The total number of cumulative Avian Influenza human cases in Indonesia is 108, with 87 deaths."

The center added, the victim was first taken at a clinic on October 1, and was moved the next day to Pekanbaru Hospital. She was later transferred and referred to the state hospital for bird flu cases.

However, the health ministry did not confirm if the woman was in contact with infected poultry, which was the common way of transmitting the virus.

The H5N1 string virus has affected most poultry in Indonesia.
