As the deadly Bird flu strain makes its way throughout Europe, FIFA President Sepp Blatter has said that the organization would have to consider canceling the World Cup finals in Germany if bird flu begins to spread to humans.

Blatter says he would expect the German government to call off the tournament, should such a crisis occur.

Blatter says that there was currently no chance of canceling the tournament "at the moment", but adds: "If bird flu developed into a threat like the plague or cholera, if people are infecting people, then the government must take a decision. We would have to respect that. That is clear."

The disease has so far been limited to the wild bird population in the central European country, and in neighboring countries such as Poland.

The World Cup, the world's largest soccer tournament, begins June 9th, with the final game to be played on July 9th. Billions of viewers from around the world are expected to tune in.
