| Remember when your mother forced you to eat carrots saying it will improve your eyesight? Well, she is not right anymore as new research suggests that beta carotene pills are useful against a common type of vision loss among older people. Carrots, rich in beta carotene, have been seen to improve eyesight but experts believe that age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in people 65 and older, can however not be cured by taking beta-carotene pills | | Copenhagen University researchers found that taking certain vitamins could actually shorten life spans. Supplements such as vitamins A and E, and beta-carotene thought to make people healthier were actually found to adversely affect life spans. This, nutritionists said, means that people need to eat a balanced diet instead of relying on supplements for needed nutrition | | Scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture say cold watermelon is less nutritious than watermelon served at room temperature. They say the warmer melon has more nutrients. The scientists found that watermelons continue to produce nutrients even after they've been picked and that cooling them slows down the process | | According to U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists on Wednesday, ice cold watermelons might not give you as many nutrients as room-temperature watermelons could. Also reported in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, room temperature watermelons also deliver more nutrients than freshly picked watermelons | | A recent study shows that women who eat more vegetables and fruits have a better chance of preventing the breast cancer from returning. Researchers followed more than 1,500 women, beginning on average two years after the women finished treatment for early-stage breast cancer. Initial tests confirmed that women with higher levels of carotenoids in their blood ate more vegetables and fruits | |
