The worldwide leaders on contact lens - Bausch and Lomb recalled more than 1 million bottles of contact lens solution after excess levels of iron were discovered in it. It is the second recall from the company in the past 10 months.

Last year, the company recalled its ReNu with MoistureLoc solution after reports surfaced that the solution was linked to a potentially blinding fungus. The company ceased production of its ReNu with MoistureLoc solution at the same plant in Greenville, South Carolina after it received warnings from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2006.

The latest recall of ReNu MultiPlus contact lens from all over the world has been linked to the detection of iron that may cause it to lose effectiveness earlier than normal. The traces of iron can also shorten the solution's printed shelf life and discolor the solution.

However, the Rochester, New York-based company has had no reports of health problems stemming from the contamination. According to various reports, the recall covered 12 lots, with nine of those in the U.S.

The LA Times reports that nearly 1 million bottles from those nine lots were reportedly distributed in the U.S. The company also plans to recall the product from Canada, Latin America, South Korea and Taiwan, where it was also distributed.

Ruling out any potential harm to the users, the company spokeswoman Barbara Kelley said the recall was related to a single batch of raw material from an outside supplier. She also added that the risk to consumers was "extremely low." Consumers are also advised to throw out any solution that appears to be discolored.
