A 27-week-old baby boy has reportedly died and five other premature babies are currently under treatment from an unknonw viral outbreak in the neonatal ward of a hospital in Britain.

The babies are undergoing treatment at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital after they were identified as being carriers of Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) and tested positive for Staphylococcus aureus (S aureus).

Hospital authorities have revealed that a 27-week-old baby died on December 11 after being infected with this new strain.

According to the Daily Mail, the hospital authories said that the bug can be treated with a range of antibiotics.

However it is not the same strain that caused the deaths of two people at the University Hospital of North Staffordshire, revealed in The Times this week.

According to a statement released by the hospital on Friday morning, the bug is likely to have been brought into the hospital from the outside community.

"The source of the infection is not yet known," the statement said.

It continues,"Such infections tend not to be hospital-based and it is more likely to have been brought from the community into the unit at some stage over the period of November 22 to December 19."

According to the hospital authorities, this is the first ever outbreak within its neonatal unit of this new strain.

Paul Forden, the hospital's chief executive said, "Our neonatal unit cares for the very youngest and most critically ill of all our patients."

"It is tragic that this infection may have played a part in the death of a 27-week-old baby, and our thoughts are with the parents concerned," he added.
