A baby born last month to an unconscious, severely brain-damaged northern Virginia woman has died at the age of five weeks.

In a statement, the Torres family says that Susan Anne Catherine Torres died of heart failure Sunday night after emergency surgery to repair a perforated intestine.

Susan Torres, a researcher at the National Institutes of Health, lost consciousness from a stroke on May 7 and was kept alive on life support.

The baby was born Aug. 2 by Cesarean section at 27 weeks' gestation. Her mother died shortly after her birth and was taken off life support.
