WHO Report Says More Than 500 Million People Are Infected With Genital Herpes Virus

Herpes simplex virus that causes genital herpes has infected more than half a billion people and nearly 24 million new cases happen per year, World Health Organization (WHO) said in a new study.

In the first global estimate of the prevalence and incidence of this incurable disease by herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) infection, researchers found that 536 million people aged 15-49 are infected with it, which makes it 16 percent of people in that age range

World Leaders Pledge $3 Billion To Fight Malaria

In a bid to eradicate malaria deaths globally by 2015, world leaders including the World Bank and the Gates Foundation on Wednesday pledged $3 billion to help eradicate the disease that kills approximately 1 million people a year.

The funding will support a new Global Malaria Action Plan to wipe out the disease in Africa by 2015. The plan will emphasize the introduction of a vaccine against the deadly disease, and provide better access to bed nets, indoor spraying, improved diagnosis and treatment and preventative measures for pregnant women
