Researchers from the Menzies School of Health Research (MSHR), in Darwin, Australia made a breakthrough in malaria treatment.

In a new study, MSHR researchers have successfully tested the new treatment for the vivax strain of malaria. P. vivax and P. falciparum that are two strains of malaria targeting the human body.

"Scientists and doctors wage a constant battle to develop and implement effective treatments for malaria. This study is one of the first to highlight the best treatment of drug resistant strains of vivax malaria found in the Asia pacific region," a MSHR researcher said.

Nearly 40 percent of the world's population is at risk of vivax malaria and there are nearly 250 million cases a year in the Asia-Pacific region, according to an estimate, researchers said.
