Infection with the deadly Hendra and Nipah viruses often leads to a fatal case of encephalitis and there has not been any effective treatment. Although scientists say they aren't sure how the viruses are transmitted, they say it is either by close contact with an infected host or by breathing in the microscopic pathogens | | Queensland, the only state in Australia that does not fluoridate its waters, is ranking as it relates to the oral health of its children. A new study on the dental health status of children in 44 countries around the world revealed that kids in Uganda, Africa have better oral health than their counterparts in Australia | | Scientists in the United Kingdom have found that additives contained in snack foods adversely affect children's behavior. In a report published in The Lancet, a medical journal, the scientists revealed that additives found in popular snack foods such as sweets, ice cream and biscuits can cause behavioral problems among kids | | Smoking in cars with children will be banned in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia starting in 2008, public health officials said Friday. Beginning in January, smoking will no longer be allowed in vehicles with children under the age of 19 | | Australian Family Association spokeswoman Angela Conway on Monday downplayed the proposal of a west Australian medical expert who implied that every couple in the country with more than two children should be "taxed" to offset the carbon emissions generated over each child's lifetime.
