The reason behind their announcement on Monday, recent studies have shown that the prevalence of adult ADHD in the United States tops 4 percent.
Anathea Waitekus, analyst at Decision Resources says, "Growth of the adult population has picked up, especially since the approval of Eli Lilly's Strattera for ADHD treatment in 2003 and Shire's Adderall XR in 2004 for the treatment of adult ADHD. Before 2003, no drugs were approved for treatment of ADHD in adults."
Waitekus continues, "With this recent growth, the drug-treated adult ADHD population now rivals the adult drug-treated populations of other psychiatric diseases, such as bipolar disorder and social anxiety disorder."
