State GOP Chairman Gilbert Baker is speaking out against one doctor's decision to perform free abortions for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

According to Baker, the evacuees have already endured the trauma of a hurricane and might not be in the right frame of mind to make a life-or-death decision.

Baker's argument follows news that Dr. Jerry Edwards of Little Rock Family Planning Medical Services had performed free abortions for six women - and planned to continue doing so.

Normally his clinic charges $525 to $600 for the procedure.

Edwards' contends it may be too dangerous for evacuees to wait to have an abortion until they're able to return home.
