Bayer AG will take its blood-clotting injection Trasylol off the shelves from U.S. stores after the Food and Drug Administration announced that it will reexamine the drug's side effects, according to published reports Monday.

According to the Wall Street Journal citing people close to the story, it is still uncertain if the German drug maker will pull the drug from other markets, but that it remains a likely possibility

Trasylol, a clotting drug used to prevent excessive bleeding during heart bypass surgery, increases the risk of death when compared with other drugs, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned Thursday.

The Canadian trial for the drug manufactured by Bayer AG had to be stopped early due to an increase in deaths for cardiac surgery patients placed on the drug. The trial was to include 3,000 patients

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) - advisory committee on Wednesday recommended the marketing of a drug called aprotinin, which is used in coronary artery bypass graft surgery to prevent excessive bleeding.

Despite being linked to increased risk of death and other serious side effects, federal advisers voted 16-1, with one abstention, to recommend allowing sales of the a Bayer AG drug sold under the brand name Trasylol

Researchers are suggesting replacing the drug sold by Bayer AG under the brand name Trasylol with some other, cheaper medications for a year. The replacement is expected to prevent 10,000 deaths worldwide over the next five years. Additionally, the scientists also found that prolonged use of Trasylol raised the risk of kidney failure, heart attacks and strokes
