The latest issue of Men's Fitness magazine has ranked Albuquerque, New Mexico as the fittest city in the United States, up from 13th place showing a year ago.

Albuquerque's mayor said he was not surprised his city took the top spot on the Men's Fitness list, citing the various activities, such as hiking and biking, that Albuquerque has to offer residents and visitors alike.

According to the magazine's survey of 50 cities, following Albuquerque as the nation's "fittest city" is Seattle at No. 2, followed by Colorado Springs; Minneapolis; Tucson; Denver; San Francisco; Baltimore; Portland, and Honolulu.

The survey examines lifestyle factors in each city, including fast-food restaurants per capita, availability of gyms or bike paths, commute times, how much television watching Nielsen records, federal health statistics on obesity-related injuries and illnesses.

On the other end of the spectrum, the so-called "fattest" city in the country is Las Vegas, up from No. 2 last year. Following Las Vegas, the top five "fattest" cities are San Antonio; Miami; Mesa, Ariz.; and Los Angeles.

Meanwhile, the survey also ranked Cleveland as the city with the most fast-food restaurants; Memphis claimed the top spot for most TV watching; and Oakland was ranked as the city with the best eating habits.
