A newborn infant infected with an unknown form of bacteria is in intensive care in an Alberta hospital.

The Chinook Health Region is still awaiting test results to establish the cause and type of the infections. A baby boy died, reportedly, of the same infection Friday morning after surgery.

The two babies were transferred last week from Lethbridge Regional Hospital, where the two babies were born, to the Alberta Children's Hospital.

Initial findings reveal that the babies contracted a flesh-eating disease, according to news reports.

However, this was dismissed by Alberta health officer Dr. Richard Musto saying that the findings were "alarmist," CHQR radio news reported.

Musto also downplayed reports that the infections originated from Lethbridge. The babies also came from different communities, he added.
