HIV/AIDS cases surpassed the 5,000 mark, with 938 deaths, the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported on Thursday.

The KCDC said 575 HIV/AIDS cases were reported from January to September this year. It counted 686 patients as having full-blown AIDS.

Most of the newly infected patients, or 93 percent of them, are men. A total 166 of them are in their 30s, 143 in their 40s and 104 in their 20s. Ten are teens and 64 are over 60 years old.

KCDC said 354 people were infected through sexual intercourse, 35 percent of which through same-gender sexual contact.

KCDC began recording HIV/AIDS cases in 1985, when the first South Korean who developed the disease was reported. Since then, the agency has been issuing quarterly report on HIV/AIDS cases.
