Following warning reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a California-based contact lens manufacturer is recalling its Complete MoisturePlus lens solution from stores as a precautionary measure.

Federal officials say the lens solution by Advanced Medical Optics could lead to a rare but serious eye infection. If left untreated, the infection could cost patients their eyesight.

The solution, which acts as a cleanser for soft contact lenses and is also used to store them, was recalled following reports of acanthamoeba keratitis - an eye infection caused by a parasite.

According to the CDC, there have been reports of eye infections in at least 138 patients since January 2005. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is urging all consumers who wear soft contact lenses to immediately discontinue the use of the solution and discard all partially-used or unopened bottles. Users should also replace their lenses and storage containers.

Symptoms of acanthamoeba keratitis can include pain, redness, blurry vision and light sensitivity. This infection if different from the health scare that prompted a major contact lens recall by Bausch and Lomb about a year ago.
