A small study lead by researchers at University of Turin in Italy, suggests that overuse of pain killers to relieve chronic migraines may alter certain hormonal responses. The study's lead author, Dr. Innocenzo Rainero, told Reuters Health that earlier proved concept suggests that overusing migraine medications can sometimes cause periodic migraines to become chronic, and the new findings suggest that altered hormone regulation may be one reason |

A new study from the May 15 issue of the Archives of Women's Mental Health journal reports that the incorporated data of nearly 19,000 teenagers found that both girls and boys who engage in high-risk behaviors have a tendency to develop symptoms of depression. A new survey shows a decrease in teen smoking and drinking but also finds abuse of prescription drugs is a problem most parents failed to recognize. For a third straight year, the Partnership for a Drug-Free America study showed that about 1 in 5 teens have tried prescription drug painkillers such as Vicodin or OxyContin to get high -- about 4.5 million teens. Data released Wednesday shows that nearly 2 million visits to the emergency room in 2004 were drug-related. The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) reports that nearly 1.3 million of those visits involved drug or alcohol abuse. It also found that 30 percent of those visits involved only illicit drugs, while 25 percent were a result of prescription or over-the counter medications |
