About 24,000 Indonesian-made baby cribs are being recalled after they failed to meet federal safety standards, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said Thursday night. The officials also warned parents against putting their babies to bed with pillows and other soft bedding that could suffocate them.

The cribs, imported by Munire Furniture Inc., were recalled due to dangerous brackets that don't allow their mattresses to be fully lowered. The officials say it could allow children inside the crib to crawl over the railing and fall.

The recall includes the company's Majestic Curved Top, Majestic Flat Top, Essex, Brighton/Sussex and Captiva cribs with various model numbers. The cribs were sold at children's specialty stores between November 2005 and November 2007. No injuries have been reported.

"The four support brackets on the mattress support spring are too long," Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) said. "The brackets prevent the spring from lowering to the full 26 inch minimum height in its lowest position, allowing children inside to crawl over the railing, posing a fall hazard," it added.

According to data collected by CPSC, nearly 241 children under age 5 died in incidents involving nursery products from 2002 to 2004. About 40 percent of the deaths involved cribs, with soft bedding cited as the leading contributing factor. The deaths occurred when the children suffocated lying face down on pillows or other bedding.

The officials also urged parents to place babies on their back in a crib that meets current safety standards. There were also reports of 36 deaths over the same period relating to baby baths and bath seats. All deaths occurred after parents left the baby unattended and the babies slipped out of bath seats, fell out of baby seats or tipped forward or sideways into the water.

The cribs sold for between $400 and $600 at specialty juvenile product stores nationwide between November 2005 and November 2007. The most common injuries in 2006 resulted from falls, and the head was the most frequently injured body part.
