A study conducted by South Australian and Victorian health researchers found that 74 percent men and 64 percent women in rural Australia are obese and overweight.

The study, published in the "Medical Journal of Australia" surveyed at least 800 people in Australia's rural communities. A mere 30 per cent of those who were surveyed were believed to have a healthy weight.

Researcher Professor Edward Janus from the department of medicine at Western Health in Melbourne says he is extremely worried about the findings.

He said, "This is actually the worst finding in overweight obesity that have ever been recorded in Australia. They're worse than what was found in a major study on overweight and diabetes about five years ago which was predominantly in cities."
