According to Reuters, Patricia Rashbrook, a child psychologist from Lewes, East Sussex, received in vitro fertilization treatment last October.
The Italian doctor who treated Rashbrook, Severino Antinori, says he performed the procedure on Rashbrook in an unnamed former Soviet republic because Italy has strict laws on assisted reproduction.
Rashbrook was perfect for the treatment, Antinori says, because although she was 62 at the time of the treatment, her biological age was around 45.
He says, "She should live at least 20-25 years - we are not giving birth to an orphan."
Rashbrook's 61-year-old husband, John Farrant, gave the Sun newspaper the news that his wife was seven months pregnant.
"We wish to emphasize that this has not been an endeavor taken lightly," the couple says in a joint statement. "A great deal of thought has been given to planning and providing for the child's future and present well-being, medically, socially and materially."
