He had been around chickens that suddenly died later. Officials say that two tests have confirmed that the boy is positive for the virus.
Two other children from Tangarrang, a city just outside the capital, died of bird flu earlier this month, but officials say those cases were not linked to this boy.
The deadly H5N1 virus is widespread among all types of birds in Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country. It had its first reported case of human bird flu in 2005 and 89 of the 111 cases there have been fatal.
