Another victim of the deadly bird flu virus died in Egypt Sunday, bringing to 17 the total death toll in the country.

The state-run MENA news agency reports that 25-year-old Egyptian woman, who earlier tested positive for the H5N1 strain of bird flu, succumbed to the fatal strain three days after she was admitted to the hospital.

Fatma Fathi Mohamed died at a hospital in the Nile Delta city of Mansoura, MENA reports, quoting health ministry spokesman Abdel Rahman Shahin.

The health ministry said the victim may have contracted the virus by handling infected domestic birds.

She was initially admitted in a small local hospital complaining of high fever and breathing difficulties.

Mohamed is Egypt's second fatality in just a week. Another 25-year-old woman, Ola Younis, also died of bird flu Wednesday in Beni Suef province south of Cairo.

Mohamed is the 42nd human victim of the avian flu since the virus first appeared in Egypt in February 2006.

Egypt is one of the countries outside Asia severely affected by the H5N1 strain.

Most of the casualties have been among women from poultry-raising families and who had regular contact with turkeys or chickens.

The virus has infected more than 340 people and killed at least 212 worldwide since 2003.
